The Pay Equity Act, adopted in 1996 by the National Assembly of the Province of Quebec, requires that any employer of 10 people or more in Quebec implements a pay equity plan.
The Act was modified significantly on May 28th 2009. Provisions for organizations having and not having implemented their program have been changed to facilitate their implementation. The Pay Equity Commission budget has been increased. The fines for non compliance have been adjusted to reflect the size of the delinquent organizations.
